Goal Setting: Starting Point to a Productive Life

A man who knows where is going and how to get there and he’s
not distracted gets there on time than a man who does not have direction in
life.

A man was traveling and stopped at an intersection. He asked an elderly man, “Where does this road take me?” The elderly man asked, “Where do you want to go?”

The man replied, “I don’t know.” The elderly man said, “Then take any road. What difference does it make?”
productive life, goals and productivity

How true. When you don’t know where we are going, any road takes you there. You must have visions for your life, and goals on how to get there. Otherwise you will become a victim of fate in life.

Goal setting gives direction and motivates to achieve
results. It’s a propeller, a drive for you that want to succeed.
Goals must be set irrespective of your concerns; personal or
general. The goal for every footballer on the pitch is to get the ball into the opponents net. For a manufacturer, is to meet the demands of their numerous customers etc.

Goal Setting Defined

Goal setting is a process of improving performance by
planned and output directed activities which portray sign post for goal seeker within a given period of time.

Why Is Goal Setting Important?

  • Generally, goals give a sense of direction.
  • Clearly defined goals and well stated goals lay out the
vision, the action plan and the tracking system for measuring incremental progress.
  •  Without goals, it is impossible to manage your time
    effectively.
  •  It gives you focus.
  •  It drives you.
  •  It brings out the best in you.
  •  While setting goals, you get to consider what is important in your life.
  • It keeps your mind occupied.
  • It gives you an image of the future.
  • It gives joy and boosts confidence.

Wishes and Goals

If you ask most people what their major objective in life
is, they would probably give indefinite answers such as, “I want to be successful, be happy, make good money, make a good living,” and that is it.

They are all wishes and none of them are clear goals. It becomes a goal if you it’s:
     ·         SPECIFIC
      ·        MEASURABLE
      ·        ACHIEVABLE
      ·        REALISTIC
      ·        TIME SENSITIVE/TIME BOUND

Making your goals clear and easily understood using the above SMART technique will ensure that you are fair to
yourself.

Productivity

Productivity is a result of well defined objectives. If you love to live a productive life, you have to meet up with your goals.

Brian Tracy said "goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement." The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose. If you fail give yourself a purpose by setting goals and making sure you accomplish them, you are like a runaway horse; dangerous, without direction and most importantly you are vulnerable to being mislead by people.
